Serbia backed UN resolution on Ukraine "by mistake," president says
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that his country mistakenly voted in favor of a UN resolution labeling Russia as an aggressor
RTS reported the information.
The Serbian president apologized to his citizens, claiming that his country had allegedly made a mistake during the vote. He explained that he was "tired and overwhelmed" and unable to “manage everything at once.”
"I didn't have time to deal with it properly. Maybe I'm too tired, maybe I have too many things on my desk," Vučić said.
He noted that Serbia abstained from voting on the U.S. resolution, which does not name Russia as an aggressor, and acknowledged that it should have voted for the Ukrainian-European resolution in the same way.
The Serbian president stated that even if he had abstained from voting, his country would not have compromised its position on territorial integrity. However, he admitted that such a vote could have benefited Serbia.
"I don't think we should pander to any power, neither the Russians nor the Americans. I believe it was in Serbia's best interest. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Many people think it would have benefited Serbia, and many will criticize me for it. But as the president of the Republic, I have the right to express my opinion and my position," Vučić emphasized.
- On Monday, February 24, the UN Security Council supported the U.S. resolution on the war in Ukraine: the U.S. does not name Russia as an aggressor.
