UN adopts both resolutions on Ukraine, but U.S. backs its own version
On February 24, the UN General Assembly supported both resolutions regarding Ukraine. Meanwhile, the United States opposed the Ukrainian version
This was reported by the UN press center.
It is noted that 93 countries supported the resolution titled “Advancing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine.” In contrast, 18 countries voted against it, and 65 abstained.
Among the countries that did not support the resolution were Russia and the United States. According to Dorothy Shea, Deputy U.S. Representative to the UN, previous UN resolutions that condemned Russia’s actions and highlighted its violations of international law “failed to stop the war.”
“It is time for member states to return to the goals and principles of the Charter, namely, maintaining international peace and security, particularly through the peaceful settlement of disputes,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s representative to the UN, proposed an amendment calling for the “immediate cessation of the Ukrainian conflict, including by addressing its root causes,” as part of the U.S. resolution.
According to RBC-Ukraine, the Ukrainian-backed resolution explicitly refers to Russian aggression as aggression, reaffirms Ukraine’s sovereignty within its internationally recognized borders, calls for a lasting peace this year but only on the basis of the “territorial integrity of states”, and demands that Russia “fully and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from Ukrainian territory” and cease all hostilities against Ukraine and any attacks on civilians and infrastructure.
U.S. version of the resolution
The UN press center reported that the UN General Assembly also adopted the American version of the resolution.
The U.S. resolution, titled “The Path to Peace,” was supported by 93 UN member states, while 8 voted against it, and 73 abstained. Ukraine was among the countries that abstained from voting.
At the same time, Russia voted against the resolution because its proposed amendment calling for the “cessation of the Ukrainian conflict” by addressing its “root causes” was not included.
According to Suspilne, the U.S. resolution does not explicitly name Russia as the aggressor. Instead, it refers to the war in Ukraine as a “Russian-Ukrainian conflict” and “calls for the earliest possible cessation of the conflict and urges a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.”
- In December 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution titled “The Human Rights Situation in the Temporarily Occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol, Ukraine.”
