SBU detains guard of Russian torture chamber in Kherson who joined Ukrainian army
Ukraine’ Security Service (SBU) detained a former Russian torture chamber guard who collaborated with invading Russian troops during the occupation of Kherson. After the liberation of the region’s right bank, the suspect joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces to avoid justice
The SBU reported the information.
According to the investigation, the suspect is a resident of the Mykolaiv region. At the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he cooperated with Russian soldiers and was appointed as a guard at a Russian torture chamber. The torture chamber was up at the then-captured Dariivka Correctional Colony No. 10.
Russian troops would bring repressed locals and pro-Ukrainian activists to this torture chamber.
When the Ukrainian Armed Forces liberated the right bank of the Kherson region, the suspect went into hiding and later mobilized into the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In this way, he sought to avoid justice and “hide” in one of the military units in southern Ukraine.
“Based on the collected evidence, the SBU investigators served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Part 7 of Art. 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (voluntary occupation of a position by a citizen of Ukraine in illegal law enforcement agencies established in the temporarily occupied territory),” the SBU summarizes.
The suspect is currently in custody and faces up to 15 years in prison.
Note: according to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be criminally punished until his or her guilt is proved in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict.
