Russia's war efforts depend on China’s continued support, says diplomat
Director of the Center for Defense Strategies, Oleksandr Khara, believes that without China’s support, Russia would not have been able to sustain military operations for long, as it would have quickly exhausted its own resources
He shared this opinion on the air of Espreso.
"As for the negotiations, there were many initiatives. There was the Brazilian initiative, which later joined with China. Over ten points for resolving the Russia-Ukraine war were proposed there. Now they have been reduced to four points. After that, the Chinese torpedoed the Ukrainian peace process," Khara explained.
The diplomat believes that Russia could not wage war without China’s support. In particular, China continues to buy Russian energy resources and supplies Russia with dual-use goods and drones.
"Essentially, China has been and remains Russia’s ally. Beijing continues to assist Russia in this war. If China stopped buying Russian energy resources and ceased helping Moscow with dual-use goods, the war would have ended long ago. Russia would have exhausted its resources. However, Putin has such wonderful friends as Xi Jinping. There is also Narendra Modi, who leads the largest democracy in the world. But this democracy has not gone beyond ‘now is not the time for wars.’ India also continues to buy Russian oil and weapons. The Indians view this war as some kind of Western-Russian dispute and clearly remember the Cold War era. They believe they can sit on two chairs. However, their main threat remains China, and to counter Beijing, they need the U.S.," the diplomat explained.
