Russian strike kills 4, injures 24 in Sumy center
On the morning of Tuesday, June 3, Russian forces struck central Sumy. Four people were killed, and more than 20 were injured. The city declared days of mourning
The Sumy Regional Military Administration reported the attack.
“The enemy hit cars in the center of Sumy. Early reports say there are casualties,” the statement said.
Later, the State Emergency Service confirmed three people died and at least 16 were injured.
The city council then updated the number of injured to 25, including three children and three adults in serious condition.
At 4:13 p.m. Kyiv time, the Sumy Regional Military Administration announced that a 43-year-old man in critical condition died in the hospital, raising the death toll to four.
They also said the man’s 7-year-old daughter is seriously injured.
Preliminary reports say that around 9:00 a.m., five strikes from long-range MLRS hit Sumy.
In one district, a shell damaged the road, causing a car to catch fire, but firefighters quickly put it out.
In another neighborhood, a multi-apartment building was damaged, along with three private houses, a warehouse, a garage, four cars, and part of a hospital building.
Rescuers, medics, and law enforcement officers are working at the scene.
Because of the deadly Russian attack on Sumy, the city community declared June 3 and 4 as days of mourning.
Ukrainian President’s response
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about the Russian attack on Sumy, saying the Russians brutally targeted ordinary streets with rocket artillery. He called it a deliberate attack on civilians.
Zelenskyy added that at least one MLRS shell didn’t explode. It went through the wall of a regular apartment on the 9th floor.
“That alone says everything one needs to know about Russia’s so-called “desire” to end this war. It is obvious: without global pressure – without decisive actions from the United States, Europe, and everyone in the world who has the power – Putin will not agree even to a ceasefire. Not a single day goes by without Russia striking Ukrainian cities and villages. Every day, we lose our people to Russian terror. Every day, Russia gives new reasons for tougher sanctions and stronger support for our defense. I am grateful to everyone around the world who is promoting exactly this agenda: sanctions for aggression and the killing of people, and assistance in defending the lives of Ukrainians,” the president added.
- Last night, the Russian army launched strike drones over Ukrainian territory. One person was killed in Kharkiv region, and there were injuries in Chernihiv and Odesa. More details on the consequences can be found in the linked report.
