Russian soldier who shot Ukrainian POW in Zaporizhzhia region to face trial in Ukraine
A Russian soldier who shot a Ukrainian prisoner of war in the Polohy district, Zaporizhzhia region, will be tried in Ukraine
Ukraine's Office of the Prosecutor General reported the information.
On January 6, 2024, during an assault on Ukrainian Defense Forces' positions near Priyutne, a Russian sniper shot a Ukrainian POW.
"The Ukrainian defender laid down his weapon, emerged from the dugout with his hands up, signaling his surrender. However, instead of being captured, he was fatally shot," the report stated.
The suspect joined the Russian army in November 2023, after opting for a military contract over a theft sentence in a Russian colony.
In late January 2024, Ukrainian defenders detained the suspect and handed him over to law enforcement. He faces charges for violating war laws and customs, combined with intentional murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Note: According to Art. 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court.
- The Security Service of Ukraine has informed Oleg Kryuchkov, general producer of the Russian television and radio company "Crimea" in occupied Simferopol, of his suspicion.
