According to Kirby, the arrival of American weapons helped change the trajectory of the fighting around Kharkiv.
"They have been able to thwart Russian advances, particularly around Kharkiv," he said. “The Russians really have kind of stalled out up there [and] … their advance on Kharkiv is all but over because they ran into the first line of defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and basically stopped, if not pulled back, some units.”
The spokesman added that this assessment was made jointly by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Biden when they met in France on Friday to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
- On June 7, Biden gave a speech in Normandy, Pointe du Hoc, where the Allied troops landed in June 1944, drawing a parallel between the fight against fascism in the 1930s and the fight against Putin's invasion of Ukraine today.
