Russian night attack leaves one killed in Lviv, injures civilians in Mukachevo
On August 21 night, Russia launched a combined attack on Ukraine: explosions in Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Lutsk, and Rivne, with air defenses active in Kyiv
The Ukrainian Air Force reported the information.
According to Ukrinform, at 4:40 a.m., explosions were heard during a combined air attack by Russian forces in Mukachevo, Zakarpattia region.
According to Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, air defense systems were activated in the Lviv region at 4:49 a.m.
At 5:05 a.m., three more groups of cruise missiles were reported in the Sumy region on a southwestern course.
Russian strike on Mukachevo: Flex electronics plant hit, 12 injured
According to the Mukachevo City Council, a Russian missile strike overnight hit the territory of one of the city’s enterprises. Rescue services were immediately deployed to the site.
At 7:03 a.m., officials reported that 10 people had been taken to St. Martin's Hospital by ambulance, while two more victims arrived on their own. Five patients remain hospitalized, one of them transferred to the regional hospital. All have received timely medical assistance, and their condition is described as stable.
Local journalist Vitaliy Hlahola told Espreso that the target was the Flex plant, an American-owned electronics manufacturer.
“This is one of the first times Mukachevo has been hit. There had been several attempts to strike this plant before, but this was the first successful attack. The plant was operating at the time. It is the Flex plant, specializing in electronics, working as a subcontractor for major corporations as well as for individual or government orders. The facility ran around the clock, employing 1,500 people and covering 52,000 square meters. In other words, it is a huge international plant of an American company that had been operating in Zakarpattia long before the full-scale invasion,” he said.
Hlahola added that night-shift workers were warned of the missile threat and evacuated to shelters when the trajectory became clear, but despite these precautions, casualties were reported. No deaths have been confirmed.
Yuriy Dzyamulych, head of the news portal Mukachevo.net, told Espreso that of the 12 people who sought medical help, five are currently hospitalized in Mukachevo and one in the regional hospital in Uzhhorod.
“Two patients are in serious condition, while four are stable. All surgical interventions have been completed, and they remain in the hospital,” Dzyamulych said.
The remaining victims received treatment and were discharged home.
Lviv
At 7:17 a.m., Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported that the city had again been hit on Olena Stepanivna Street, the same location targeted a month earlier. According to Espreso correspondent Iryna Davosyr, residents are demanding the closure of a nearby industrial facility, believing it to be the reason for repeated attacks. Sadovyi said dozens of houses were damaged by the blast wave and that all emergency services were working on site.
At 7:51 a.m., Lviv Regional State Administration head Maksym Kozytskyi said that, according to preliminary data, one person was killed and two others injured in a combined strike by UAVs and cruise missiles. Dozens of residential buildings were damaged.
At 8:18 a.m., Sadovyi confirmed the casualty figures, adding that one man was in serious condition and undergoing surgery, while another suffered chest and leg injuries and was in moderate condition.

First Deputy Mayor of Lviv Andriy Moskalenko clarified on Espreso TV that a total of 26 houses and one kindergarten were damaged.
"There was a combined attack last night, involving both drones and missiles. Unfortunately, we have to start with sad news — one person was killed. Two people were taken to the hospital with burns of varying degrees. Houses were also damaged in the Zaliznychnyi district of the city. A total of 26 houses were damaged, which are in fact houses that have already been hit three times by Russian attacks. One kindergarten was also damaged, with about 30 windows broken," Moskalenko said.
He specified that a 38-year-old woman is in the hospital.
“We have information that, preliminarily, one more person may be in the hospital. But I think we will be able to confirm this information in 10-15 minutes,” said the first deputy mayor of Lviv.
Mayor Sadovyi confirmed the information.
“Another third victim has been reported. A 38-year-old woman is in St. Panteleimon Hospital. She has a superficial chest wound, hematomas, and a lung contusion. Her condition is moderate, and she is being examined,” he wrote.
Espreso correspondent Iryna Davosyr reported that fires broke out in three districts of Lviv overnight.
“Several people were in two residential buildings when the fires started. Rescuers evacuated them before the flames were extinguished. One person died overnight, and three others were injured, including one in serious condition. All buildings are being inspected, and people can still seek medical help,” she said.
A total of 26 buildings were damaged. Five had their roofs blown off, and 155 windows were shattered. A kindergarten also sustained damage, with 30 windows and nine doors broken, along with several administrative buildings and a court building. Rescuers and emergency services remain on site.
Lutsk
According to reports from Lutsk Mayor Ihor Polischuk, explosions were heard in Lutsk.
“Today, our community once again experienced a Russian attack using UAVs and missiles. Thank God, as of this moment, there are no casualties or fatalities,” he said at 6:55 a.m.
Zaporizhzhia
At 5:48 a.m., Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration head Ivan Fedorov reported that Russian forces had struck Zaporizhzhia. The extent of the damage is being assessed, and no casualties have been reported so far.
Later, Mykhailo Fedorov reported that Russian forces struck Zaporizhzhia twice.
“Several industrial facilities were damaged. The blast wave also shattered windows in nearby homes. Public utilities are already working at the sites of the attacks,” he wrote.
President Zelenskyy responds
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks.
“Last night, the Russian army set one of its insane anti-records. They targeted civilian infrastructure facilities, residential buildings, and our people. Several cruise missiles were lobbed against an American-owned enterprise in Zakarpattia. It was a regular civilian business, supported by American investment, producing everyday items like coffee machines. And yet, it was also a target for the Russians. This is very telling. The fire at the facility is still being extinguished. As of now, 15 people have been reported injured in the strike – all have received the necessary assistance,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that rescuers are working across regions from Zaporizhzhia to Volyn.
“And the Russians carried out this attack as if nothing has changed at all, as if there are no global efforts to stop this war. This requires a response. There is still no signal from Moscow that they truly intend to engage in substantive negotiations and end this war. Pressure is needed. Strong sanctions, strong tariffs. I thank everyone who is helping,” the President emphasized.
