Military expert Oleksandr Kovalenko has analyzed the Russian military losses.
In early April, Russian casualties amounted to 9,520 personnel, meaning an average of 366 occupiers died for every square kilometer of Ukrainian land captured since March. To put it into perspective, that’s approximately three and a half battalions per square kilometer.
The loss rate continues to rise, both in monthly and quarterly comparisons.
In 2024, the average casualty rate was 129 personnel per square kilometer of occupied territory. By January 2025, that number increased to 148 per square kilometer. In March, the casualty rate reached 304 per square kilometer.
The first week of April saw another jump, with 366 deaths per square kilometer.
Since the beginning of 2025, Russian forces have occupied 670 square kilometers of Ukrainian land, suffering a total of 136,780 casualties, or 204 deaths per square kilometer.
Conclusion:The trend of high Russian casualties, coupled with a reduction in territorial gains, remains consistent.
