Russian forces don't launch any assaults in Zaporizhzhia sector over last day

The Ukrainian Armed Forces' General Staff reported this on January 17.

Russian attacks on Ukraine

Within the last day, 71 combat engagements took place. In total, Russia launched 6 missile strikes, 69 airstrikes, and 35 attacks with multiple launch rocket systems at the Ukrainian troops’ positions and populated areas. Unfortunately, Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in deaths and injuries among the civilian population. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.

During the day, Russians struck more than 123 localities with various weapons.

Frontline situation

Near the state Ukrainian border with Russia and Belarus, the situation hasn't changed significantly, and no enemy offensive groups have been detected. Certain units of the Belarusian Armed Forces are performing tasks in the areas bordering Ukraine.

At the same time, the Russian army continued shelling the entire borderline with mortars and artillery: over 30 settlements across the Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions were attacked. 

In the Kupyansk sector, Ukrainian defenders repelled 6 attacks near Synkivka, Kharkiv region, where the Russian army was trying to improve its tactical position. About 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Lyman sector, Ukrainian defenders repelled 10 Russian attacks near Terny and Yampolivka in the Donetsk region and another 8 attacks near Makiivka and Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region. About 15 localities suffered from enemy artillery and mortar attacks.

In the Bakhmut sector, Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled 7 Russian attacks in the areas of Hryhorivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka and Andriivka in the Donetsk region. About 10 localities came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Avdiivka sector, Ukrainian defenders repelled 11 Russian attacks in the areas of Novokalynove, Novobakhmutivka, Avdiivka and another 13 attacks near Sevierne, Pervomaiske and Nevelske in the Donetsk region. About 15 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.

In the Marinka sector, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the Russian  army in the areas of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Marinka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. In this area, the invading forces, with the support of aviation, tried to break through the Ukrainian defense 9 times. Over 5 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Shakhtarsk sector, Ukrainian defenders repelled an attack north of Novodonetske in the Donetsk region, where the Russian troops unsuccessfully tried to improve the tactical situation. More than 10 localities came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Zaporizhzhia sector, Russia did not conduct any assault operations. However, more than 20 localities came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Kherson sector, about 5 localities were subjected to enemy artillery fire. 

Russia does not abandon its intention to drive Ukrainian units out of their footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro. Thus, during the day, the invading forces made 6 unsuccessful assaults on the Ukrainian positions.

Ukrainian military strikes against Russian troops

Over the day, Ukrainian aviation struck 7 manpower concentration areas, 1 control center, and 5 enemy anti-aircraft missile systems. The Ukrainian Air Defense Forces also destroyed one Kh-59 guided missile.

Missile troops destroyed 1 manpower concentration area, 2 radar stations, 2 air defense facilities, 2 artillery facilities, and 1 munitions depot.

• Over the past day, January 16, 98 combat engagements took place at the frontline. At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces killed 730 Russian soldiers.
