Russia targets families of Ukrainian POWs in new psyop
A new Russian psyop targeting relatives of prisoners of war is happening in Ukraine. Unknown people, pretending to be “representatives of Russian authorities responsible for exchanges,” are trying to pressure and trick the families of Ukrainian defenders
Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported the information.
According to them, these impostors urge relatives to send mass electronic appeals to state and international organizations.
They also demand that relatives send proof (photos or screenshots of letters) in private messages and share these “instructions” in chat groups for families of missing persons.
To make it easier, they even provide a sample text and a list of institutions to send the appeals to, including:
- The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War
- The National Information Bureau
- The International Committee of the Red Cross
- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)
- The White House
The Coordination Headquarters stressed: “These actions have nothing to do with official prisoner exchange processes. This is a psychological operation by the aggressor to create panic, destabilize society, and discredit state authorities. We urge people not to trust such calls. Instead, they should immediately contact law enforcement and the Coordination Headquarters.”
- Russia has created fake humanitarian organizations to cover up the detention locations of Ukrainian POWs and prevent international observers from accessing them.
