Russia looted some 23,000 artifacts from Kherson museum, Ukrainian officials say
As they retreated from Kherson, Russian forces looted around 23,000 artifacts and part of the technical equipment from the regional history museum, and also destroyed or damaged much of its exhibition infrastructure
The Kherson Regional Administration reported the information.
Olha Honcharova, acting director of the Kherson Regional History Museum, said that in addition to the theft of thousands of artifacts and equipment, Russian forces severely damaged the museum’s exhibition spaces. The historic building itself has now become a regular target of Russian attacks.
“After Kherson was liberated, museum staff collected hundreds of fragments from Russian shells in the museum’s courtyards and buildings. But the missiles and artillery of the terrorist state will not destroy our history and culture,” Honcharova stated. Museum researchers continue their work: accepting new items for safekeeping, offering online tours, and preserving evidence of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
“After Ukraine’s victory, the valuable exhibits currently held in safer regions of our country will definitely return to the museum. New exhibitions will be created to reflect everything we have lived through in the fight against Russian aggression. They will gather all memory, experience, and information to ensure that the Russian invasion is never repeated,” the Kherson Regional Administration added.
