Russia expects U.S. support to achieve war goals through diplomacy
The spokesperson for the Russian leader, Dmitry Peskov, claims that Vladimir Putin started the war in Ukraine because he could not achieve his goals through diplomacy
Peskov told journalists this on May 19, according to TASS.
“It is preferable, of course, to achieve our goals through political and diplomatic means,” said the Kremlin representative.
According to him, Putin made “considerable efforts in 2022 to pursue a diplomatic path to achieve our goals.”
“At that time, we received a rather firm refusal even to discuss draft documents prepared by the Russian side,” said Peskov.
He added that the refusals also came from NATO and the OSCE.
“When there are no more options for maneuvering on the political-diplomatic track, then a special military operation begins,” Peskov added.
He expressed hope that U.S. mediation in negotiations with Ukraine would allow Russia to achieve its goals in the war through diplomatic means.
- The Russian Foreign Ministry demands that Ukraine "recognize the realities on the ground," including Russia’s incorporation of Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territories.
