Russia may successfully attack NATO within 3–7 years unless capabilities are increased now — Rutte
NATO as an Alliance must start acting gradually today - a lot will be spent on defense over the next 3-5 years
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this at a press conference ahead of the Alliance summit.
“There is agreement within NATO that if Russia attacked us today, it would be very bad for Russia. But in about 3–5–7 years, Russia could successfully attack us if we do not begin building up our capacity now,” he said.
Rutte added that NATO must begin gradually today – a lot will be spent on defense over the next 3–5 years.
“It’s important that this spending is appropriate – more soldiers, more military equipment. During this period, we will be able to strengthen NATO’s potential. Look at what China is doing – building up its armed forces, investing in ships – there will be 30 additional ships at sea. We must ensure the defense of our countries,” the Secretary General concluded.
