Trump, Putin, and Xi may disagree, but they're all marching toward past — journalist Portnikov

Ukrainian analyst and journalist Vitaly Portnikov says that the desires of Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping may not align, but they all want a return to the past

He shared this in an interview with Espreso.

According to Portnikov, U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are "revanchists, not people who want to build something new."

"Trump wants to restore America's role as a global hegemon, disregarding others and not ensuring security for them, while instead benefiting from relations with other states without considering their interests. Putin wishes to be at least a political hegemon of Europe, and Xi Jinping clearly aims to be the political hegemon of Asia," said the analyst.

"Of course, these three leaders' desires may not align, but in any case, each of them seeks a return to the past," Portnikov emphasized.

In his opinion, Trump wants to bring the United States back to the 1930s. Meanwhile, Putin wants to take Russia back to 1945. Xi Jinping, on the other hand, wants to return China to the role of the Chinese Empire from the "forgotten dynasties," which are still well-remembered in China.

"This is not a world of the 21st century; it's a world of past centuries. Each has their own obvious paradigm. Trump, Putin, and Xi Jinping are all marching into the past, further and further, and I think it will only increase," he added.
