Poland's Defense Ministry reports escalating migrant situation at Polish-Belarusian border
On Saturday, April 5, Poland’s Minister of Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, reported an escalation of the situation at the Polish-Belarusian border, noting that illegal migrants are throwing stones, branches, and using angle grinders to break through the barrier
According to Polsat News, the account from the operational commander of the Polish Armed Forces, General Macej Kliś, cited by Błaszczak, reveals that the methods employed by migrants are becoming increasingly violent.
The head of the Ministry of Defense assured that Polish authorities are responding quickly to the actions of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. He mentioned that only on the night of Saturday, April 5, about 300 attempts to illegally cross the border were thwarted.
Błaszczak also pointed out that the migratory pressure from Belarus and Russia is increasing. According to him, this situation indicates an organized campaign aimed at weakening Poland and Europe.
The Minister was also asked about the information campaign announced on Friday by Prime Minister Donald Tusk in seven countries from which the migrants attempting to cross the border illegally originate, especially in light of the fact that similar campaigns previously conducted by the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party had been ineffective.
"The campaign was run by PiS, so I’m not surprised it didn’t work," he responded, emphasizing that the new campaign will be implemented in connection with real changes in border security. The Minister praised the effectiveness of border protection, stating that the system now ensures 98% security. He also highlighted changes in methods, stressing that Poland will no longer accept asylum applications from individuals who have illegally crossed the border.
- On Sunday morning, April 6, Poland scrambled military aircraft in response to Russia’s missile attack on Ukraine. Western fighter jets were involved.
