Peace talks with Russia pose risk of Ukraine's capitulation, says expert
Yuriy Romanyuk, an expert on international issues and head of the NGO Ukraine in NATO, believes that for Ukraine, sitting down at the negotiating table with Russia would be capitulation
He shared his opinions on Espreso TV.
"Why should Ukraine engage in peace talks with Russia? To negotiate army cuts, renounce NATO, revive the Russian language and church, and accept 20-30 more demands? Trump doesn't care about peace talks; he only wants one thing – the end of the war. And Ukraine should only want one thing – the end of the war.
Forget peace talks, any talks would be Ukraine's capitulation. Ukraine didn’t capitulate in 2014, it didn’t capitulate on February 24, 2022, nor in Gomel or Istanbul, and now we’re being forced to capitulate in May 2025 at the negotiation table," commented Yuriy Romanyuk.
He stated that there is no point in negotiating with Putin, as the guarantees from the Russian leader are worthless.
"I want to see a return to Japan’s experience in 1945, which did not fight but remained in a state of war with the Soviet Union, and today with Russia. I want it to be like South Korea and North Korea, who never sat at the negotiating table and didn’t make deals because there’s nothing to negotiate about," said the head of the NGO Ukraine in NATO.
- On May 10, Putin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the U.S. and Europe must stop supplying weapons to Ukraine in order to reach a 30-day ceasefire agreement.
