Russian forces damage over 63,000 energy facilities in Ukraine
In 2024, massive Russian strikes and daily targeted shelling of Ukrainian energy facilities led to a loss of about 10 GW of capacity
This was reported by the head of the Ministry of Energy, Herman Halushchenko.
He called the 2024-2025 heating season the most challenging, but noted that blackouts were avoided, and electricity consumption restrictions were minimal.
"Blackouts, prolonged outages—everything experts predicted—did not happen. Despite apocalyptic forecasts, the energy system held up. There were no mass outages for domestic consumers, despite the high intensity of massive and daily targeted strikes on the energy sector. Even after the most extensive strikes, the energy sector quickly restored power supply—within a few days, there were no restrictions. And since January, there have been no electricity supply restrictions for the population. This is the result of enormous work, professionalism, and incredible resilience," the official said.
He reminded that from November 17, 2024, to March 2025, there were nine massive attacks on Ukraine's energy system. The most powerful of them was on December 13, when more than 300 strike weapons simultaneously attacked the energy infrastructure. Halushchenko emphasized that despite the intensity of the attacks, the energy sector managed to restore about 60% of the damaged generation. All nine energy blocks of Ukraine's nuclear power plants operated at full capacity.
