On Wednesday, October 22, Orbán stated that Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is in Washington.

“Preparations for the peace summit are ongoing. The date has not been set yet. When the time comes, we will hold it,” the Hungarian prime minister wrote.

He did not specify which summit he meant, but from the context it is clear that the Hungarian prime minister was referring to a potential meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.

“And, of course, tomorrow, during the Peace March, we will show the world that Budapest was not chosen by chance. It was chosen because Hungary is an island of peace, and Hungarians stand on the side of peace,” Orbán added.

  • On October 21, CNN reported that the Donald Trump–Vladimir Putin summit in Budapest was under threat due to the postponement of a planned meeting between Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov.
  • Later, Reuters reported that Trump and Putin do not plan to meet “in the near future.”
