Not a single hydroelectric power plant in Ukraine remains unattacked by Russia – Ukrhydroenergo
Ihor Syrota, CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, Ukraine’s largest hydropower generating company, has said that during Russia's full-scale invasion, all of the country’s hydroelectric power plants were attacked
He said this during a telethon.
According to the CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, as a result of Russian attacks, Ukrainian hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) have lost about 40% of their generation capacity, while thermal power plants have lost more than 80%. These sources of generation are crucial for balancing the Ukrainian energy sector, so there is a shortage of balancing generation.
“Today, unfortunately, there is not a single station that has not been attacked by Russia. More than 130 missile strikes have been launched against our generation facilities. We realize that we are losing and have lost a lot,” Syrota noted.
He emphasized that the Kakhovka HPP was completely destroyed, and the DniproHES sustained significant damage. All other hydroelectric power plants are in the process of being restored.
“We don’t yet know what will be possible to restore. The goal is to recover as much as possible by the fall and winter, but this is a challenging task because there are constant rocket attacks almost every week and every month. We plan one thing, but the enemy plans another. Therefore, it is very difficult to predict anything at this time,” Syrota added.
