Ukraine’s negotiators aware of proposed peace deal compromises, but can’t reveal them publicly – Major Hetman

A veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Major (Res.) of the National Guard of Ukraine, Oleksiy Hetman, stated that Ukraine is being urged to make compromises, but no one is specifying what exactly those compromises entail

He made this statement on Espreso TV.

"Talks about compromises are extremely frustrating, especially for those on the front lines. If we are being told that we must make compromises, but we don't want to, then has anyone actually heard what exactly the U.S., in the person of Trump, is proposing? What compromises? Other than vague claims that it will be a tough deal. And then there are these discussions about us having to repay a massive debt—five times bigger than what we have paid before. In that case, we should also ask: who will compensate us for the weapons we handed over to Russia? For the nuclear weapons we gave up to Russia? Did we just give them away for free?" Hetman remarked.

According to the National Guard Reserve Major, Ukraine is being offered a "new Budapest Memorandum"—one without guarantees.

"They want us to sign some piece of paper, make concessions, while they won’t say it out loud. Because if they do, there will be an uproar worldwide. Some of the signatories want to take our territory, others want to take our natural resources. And these are the very people who once guaranteed our security. The Budapest Memorandum was just a piece of paper instead of real guarantees—it contained nothing concrete," Hetman emphasized.

The National Guard Reserve Major also added that highly secret negotiations are currently taking place.

"In other words, we are being urged to compromise and expected to support it, but no one will say exactly what kind of compromise or what is being proposed for Ukraine. I am certain that our leadership, our negotiation teams, and our diplomats involved in this process already understand everything perfectly. They have already heard the details, but they have been banned to speak about it publicly," Hetman suggested.

  • Politician Yuriy Lutsenko believes that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should consider replacing the chief negotiator with the Trump administration and, as a first step, appoint an experienced, professional person as a special representative to the U.S.
