Nearly one-fifth of Slovaks want Russia to win war against Ukraine
Over 18% of Slovaks want Russia to win its war against Ukraine
This is evidenced by the results of a public opinion poll conducted by Ipsos for the independent organization Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO), published on Tuesday by Denník N.
The survey shows that only one-third of Slovaks support a Ukrainian victory, while 33% prefer a temporary peace deal without a clear winner. Over 16% of respondents said they either didn’t know or didn’t care how the conflict ends.
Support for Ukraine’s victory is lowest among voters of Smer, the ruling party led by Prime Minister Robert Fico. Just 3% of Smer supporters back Ukraine, while 43% favor a Russian win. Among voters of the extra-parliamentary Republic movement—formed as a splinter group from Marian Kotleba’s far-right People’s Party “Our Slovakia”—44% want Russia to win, and only 6% support Ukraine.
A similar pattern appears among supporters of the coalition Slovak National Party: 31% back a Russian victory, and only 4% support Ukraine. In contrast, voters of the coalition party Hlas are more favorable to Ukraine, with 27% backing its victory and 14% favoring Russia.
Ukraine receives the most support from voters of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party (75%) and the non-parliamentary Democrats party (63%) led by former defense minister Jaroslav Naď. Just 4% of Democrat voters and 1% of Progressive Slovakia voters favor a Russian victory.
Among Christian Democratic Movement voters, 53% support Ukraine and 4% back Russia. Similarly, 50% of Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) voters support Ukraine, compared to just 4% who support Russia. Within the Slovak Movement, 47% of voters are on Ukraine’s side.
Age also plays a role in opinions: only 7% of people aged 16 to 24 want a Russian win, but that figure rises to 18% among those aged 35–44, 20% among those aged 55–64, and up to 26% among voters over 65.
