Russian drone incursion in Poland prompts NATO to bolster eastern defenses
NATO is preparing defensive military measures after Russian drones breached Polish airspace. The aim is to boost deterrence on the Alliance's eastern flank
Bloomberg reports.
According to Bloomberg, the military response will be coordinated by Alexus Grinkevich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, who is responsible for planning and conducting all NATO operations.
His command is currently analyzing the situation and deciding which resources may need to be deployed.
“Looking forward, there’s absolutely more to be done,” Grynkewich said in Vilnius on Thursday. “There are enhancements to weaponry to get to lower-cost engagement, that nations have been experiencing with, will continue to push with all the nations of the alliance.”
He added that NATO will draw conclusions and that “we are now learning about things” that need to be improved to counter “limited incursions.”
The source also reported that, in addition to the “military response,” there will be a political one. The first such response was announced on Wednesday, when NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other allied leaders condemned Russia’s “reckless behavior.”
In addition, the source reported that although the number of drones violating Polish airspace was unprecedented — forcing NATO aircraft to shoot them down right in the Alliance’s airspace — it is difficult to determine their intent.
Russian Shaheds in Polish airspace. Background
Polish Armed Forces’ Operational Command put air defense systems and aviation on highest alert due to Russia’s night attack on Ukraine: Russian drones violated the country’s airspace.
As a result of a Russian attack on the night of September 10, drone debris fell on a residential building in a village in Poland’s Lublin Voivodeship. No one was injured.
Ukraine's President Zelenskyy says Ukraine is ready to help Poland develop an alert and air defense system. Meanwhile, European Commission President von der Leyen announces the EU will build a “drone wall” on the Russia border.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the violation of Poland’s airspace by Russian drones, stating that Kyiv had warned Warsaw about the UAV movements.
On Wednesday, September 10, NATO activated Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty after Russian drones violated Polish territory.
Experts say the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace marks a dangerous new chapter in Russia's war against Ukraine, now stretching into its fourth year.
