Macron calls for tougher sanctions against Russia if Ukraine peace talks fail
French President Emmanuel Macron made a statement emphasizing the need to step up sanctions pressure on Russia if peace talks with Ukraine fail

Macron noted that if the current peace negotiations on resolving the war in Ukraine do not yield the desired results, the international community must be ready to take decisive action.
“President Trump believes we can get an agreement and believes that President Putin also wants a peace accord. But if at the end this process is met by refusal, we are also ready to say that we need to increase sanctions [on Russia],” he said in Washington.
- On August 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at the White House, where he was welcomed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The leaders first held a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office, after which they met with European leaders and the NATO Secretary General. The talks then continued in a different format.
- Following the talks, Trump announced that he had begun preparations for a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin.
