Istanbul talks: No breakthrough expected today
It appears today that the negotiations, even if they take place, will not lead to success
All parties are merely pretending to be interested, competing to shift the blame for the failure of Trump’s diplomatic efforts onto their enemies.
“Today, we face not only asymmetric delegation representation but also differing agendas. Ukraine and its European partners propose starting with Trump’s 30-day ceasefire, while Russia insists on resuming the three-year-old Istanbul talks.”
Therefore, there will be no progress today, on Thursday. But perhaps on Friday or Saturday there will be a continuation at some other level or in a different configuration.
Putin had no reason or motivation to go to Istanbul. He will not give the initiative to Zelenskyy and will continue to dictate terms, including to Trump.
As long as Trump demonstrates a willingness to agree with Putin, he will dictate his terms, and Witkoff will pass them on to Ukraine.
Therefore, it is not yet known what is better, a ceasefire or the termination of such negotiations…
