Heavy losses, minimal gains: Russia bleeds for inches in Ukraine

In March 2025, Russia captured 130 km² of Ukrainian territories but lost nearly 40,000 troops, reflecting heavy casualties for minimal gains

Military and political observer Oleksandr Kovalenko discussed the issue on his Telegram channel.

Accoeding to him, the invading Russian forces suffered heavy losses in March while making minimal territorial gains in Ukraine.  

As of March 31, 2025, Russia captured only 130 km²—one of the lowest rates since early 2024. Meanwhile, their March losses totaled 39,620 personnel, averaging 304 soldiers per km².  

Since the start of 2025, the Russian troops have occupied 640 km², losing 124,430 troops—an increase from 129 losses per km² in 2024 to 194 in 2025. The trend of high casualties with shrinking territorial gains persists.

  • Over the past day, Ukrainian defenders eliminated 1,230 Russian soldiers and destroyed several units of Russian equipment and weaponry.
