Germany’s Left Party thwarts Putin’s plans amid political shift

An expert has explained why this issue is being raised now, and how Germany’s recent elections brought an unexpected political shift, disrupting Moscow’s influence in the Bundestag

The Resurgam Telegram channel, which focuses on international politics, writes that the far-left party Die Linke, previously seen as pro-Russian, has repositioned itself, condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and advocating for sanctions while stopping short of supporting military aid.

This transformation contributed to the failure of Sahra Wagenknecht’s new party—expected to act as a Kremlin-friendly voice—to pass the 5% threshold needed for Bundestag representation.

Additionally, high voter turnout, especially among young people mobilized through social media campaigns, altered Germany’s political landscape. This surge prevented the far-right AfD from securing a blocking minority, weakening pro-Russian narratives in German politics.

Another major shift may be on the horizon: growing dissatisfaction within the Social Democratic Party (SPD) could lead to Chancellor Olaf Scholz being replaced by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, a strong supporter of military aid to Ukraine. If this transition occurs, Germany’s stance on defense and European security could significantly harden, further distancing Berlin from Moscow’s influence.

These developments mark a setback for the Kremlin, as its once-reliable allies in Germany face political decline or transformation, reducing Moscow’s leverage in Europe.

  • On February 23, early elections are taking place in Germany, during which Germans will elect representatives to the Bundestag and the next chancellor.
