German Bundestag elections begin with pro-Ukrainian candidate leading for chancellor
On February 23, early elections are taking place in Germany, during which Germans will elect representatives to the Bundestag and the next chancellor
El Pais reports that these elections are crucial for Germany's political future. Polling stations opened at 8:00 AM local time and will close at 6:00 PM. After the closing, the media will publish the first exit poll data, offering an initial assessment of the results.
The early Bundestag elections are taking place because the ruling coalition, formed by the Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens (Die Grünen), and the Liberals (FDP), has collapsed. "The lack of consensus and the growing economic crisis forced the early dissolution of parliament, leading to the elections being held ahead of schedule," the publication explains.
It is emphasized that the elections will not only determine the new leadership of the country but also the direction Germany will take in key areas such as the economy, immigration, and its role in the European Union.
A total of 29 parties are participating in the elections, with the main contenders being:
- Christian Democratic Union (CDU) – Friedrich Merz. This center-right party currently leads in the polls. Merz supports Ukraine and advocates for sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
- Alternative for Germany (AfD) – Alice Weidel. A nationalist and anti-immigration party gaining increasing support in eastern Germany. Weidel has called for the restoration of trade and economic relations with Russia.
- Social Democratic Party (SPD) – Olaf Scholz. The incumbent chancellor is seeking re-election.
- Friedrich Merz criticized Trump’s statements about Ukraine, calling them Russian narratives and expressing shock over his adoption of Kremlin talking points.
