NATO summit declaration to feature important provisions on Ukraine — Rutte
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says that the final declaration of the summit, which will take place in The Hague on June 24-25, will include important provisions regarding Ukraine
He made the announcement on June 23 at a press conference in The Hague, according to Interfax-Ukraine.
According to Rutte, the declaration will specifically address:
- support for Ukraine;
- defense spending plans through 2035.
"You will find in the communiqué, which has now been agreed by the ambassadors — that is, the North Atlantic Council — important language regarding Ukraine, including those related to defense spending for the 2035 period and the need for Ukraine to continue the fight. This is a clear commitment from the allies," the NATO Secretary General said.
Although a full Ukraine–NATO Council meeting will not take place, Rutte emphasized that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will participate in several meeting formats with NATO and EU leaders.
“We will have one session with 32 leaders, we will also have a meeting with the EU, and many smaller meetings. The president of Ukraine will take part in various formats with leaders over the next few days,” Rutte said.
- On June 18, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys stated that Ukraine is unlikely to receive a formal invitation to join NATO at the Alliance summit in The Hague.
