
European leaders need their nations' support more than ever
The U.S. presented dozens of arguments to De Gaulle and the French on why they should not have an independent nuclear deterrent separate from America
However, de Gaulle did what he believed best served the interests of France and Europe.
This is about a choice that determines the future of multiple generations.
"Now, Europe must make its own choice—different, but no less significant."
A choice that will define how future generations of Europeans remember their leaders and nations.
There is no good choice. But there is a terrible one that must be avoided.
Much will depend on the support of European societies and their understanding of these difficult times, which demand sacrifices and adjustments to daily life.
