EU willing to “shoulder burden of helping Ukraine” if U.S. reduces support — Polish FM
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that EU’s largest countries are ready to "take on the burden of military and financial assistance to Ukraine" if the Donald Trump administration reduces its support
He said this after a meeting with the foreign ministers of France, the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain, Wprost reports.
"Together with the future EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, we discussed the possibilities of increasing our support for Ukraine. In this context, I note with gratitude the readiness of the largest EU countries to take on the burden of military and financial support for Ukraine in the context of a possible limitation of U.S. participation," Sikorski said.
He emphasized that the ministers agreed that Europe should take more responsibility for its own security, in particular through a more balanced distribution of "burdens" in NATO.
The Polish Foreign Minister also stressed that scenarios for ending Russia's war against Ukraine should be developed in close cooperation with Kyiv.
"We agreed that imposing peaceful solutions on Ukraine that are contrary to its interests or lack public recognition would have a negative impact on the country's stability," Sikorski emphasized.
He also commented on the sanctions against Russia.
"We are in favor of maintaining and strengthening sanctions against Russia until it withdraws from Ukraine and covers the costs of rebuilding the country. The sanctions effectively weaken Russia's military capabilities, isolating it economically," the Polish minister said.
