EU confirms continued backing for Ukraine despite Putin's nuclear threats
Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's recent threats to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states do not change the European Union's position on continuing to support Ukraine
This was stated by EU spokesman Peter Stano at a briefing in Brussels, as reported by Ukrinform.
“This is not the first time Putin has relied on his nuclear arsenal, it is just a continuation of his very irresponsible and unacceptable behavior, which reveals his true face to the world, especially during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly. He has no qualms about gambling with nuclear weapons time and again,” he said.
Stano emphasized that the European Union “strongly denies” such threats, and its position on supporting Ukraine remains “unchanged.”
According to the EU spokesperson, they are trying to convey this position to international partners and draw attention to how insane and irresponsible the behavior of a person representing a permanent member of the UN Security Council is - whose main task and responsibility is to maintain peace in the world. Yet Putin is undermining those very efforts.
“So, this is just a continuation of Putin's behavior, and it exposes his true face during a very important high-level international event currently taking place in New York,” Stano added.
- On September 25, Putin suggested several changes to Russia's nuclear deterrence policy. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) later clarified that these statements aimed to deter the West and sway future support for Ukraine.
