Russia targeted Ukraine’s energy system in 9 major strikes this heating season — PM Shmyhal
Ukraine has successfully completed its third heating season since the start of the full-scale war. This year, the country’s energy system withstood nine large-scale Russian attacks
This was reported by Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
"Over these months, Russia carried out nine large-scale and dozens of smaller attacks on our energy system. And despite all this, we endured. Homes of millions of Ukrainians, schools, and hospitals had power and heat. Our enterprises also operated without significant restrictions," the Prime Minister said.
According to him, since 2022, Russia has targeted more than 63,000 Ukrainian energy facilities, both large and small. However, thanks to continuous repair and restoration efforts, over half of the capacities damaged last year have been restored.
At the same time, Ukraine mobilized its nuclear energy sector. According to Prime Minister Shmyhal, all nine nuclear power units were operating at full capacity.
"European partners once again demonstrated unwavering support. We expanded the limits of possible electricity imports from Europe to 2.1 GW. The Ukraine Energy Support Fund collected €1.2 billion in donor contributions," Shmyhal added.
The Prime Minister also noted that this winter, Ukraine halted the transit of Russian gas.
"Our gas transmission system is operating steadily, ensuring that all consumers are provided with the necessary resources. We are already preparing for the next winter — repairing equipment, protecting energy facilities, and securing the resources needed to fund this work," the head of government emphasized.
- On March 11 in Jeddah, Ukraine agreed to the United States' proposal for a complete temporary ceasefire. Since then, Russia has launched nearly 70 missiles of various types, over 2,200 Shahed drones, and more than 6,000 guided bombs at Ukraine.
