Drones hit Stavropol chemical plant, airports shut in Russia

On the night of August 12, drones attacked the Monocrystal plant in Stavropol, one of Russia’s largest synthetic sapphire producers. Several airports suspended operations

“Last night in Stavropol, a drone attack was repelled. The drones were neutralized by our electronic warfare systems. No one was injured,” he wrote.

He also added that windows were broken at one social facility. All emergency services are working on site. The drone threat alert remains in effect across the region.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that last night, 25 Ukrainian drones were allegedly shot down: 22 over the Rostov region and 3 over Stavropol Krai.

According to the Telegram channel Mash, the attack began around 3 a.m. Local residents heard at least five explosions in the sky over the southern part of the city and the Leninsky district.

One of the drones was also spotted in Nevinnomyssk, Stavropol Krai, and the drone noise was heard in Izobilnoye.

According to the Telegram channel ASTRA, photo analysis from the site indicates that the drones targeted the Monocrystal plant. The images show smoke over the facility.

According to ASTRA’s analysis, the photo was taken near the Rostiks restaurant on Kulakov Avenue in Stavropol, where the plant is also located. The smoke in the photo is seen directly above the facility.

Several airports suspended operations

Due to the drone attack, several airports in Russia suspended operations, including Gagarin Airport in Saratov, V. G. Belinsky Airport in Penza, Kurumoch Airport in Saratov, Ulyanovsk-Baratayevka Airport in Ulyanovsk, Kazan Airport, Begishevo Airport in Tatarstan, Strigino Airport in Nizhny Novgorod, and Orenburg-Central Airport in Orenburg.

Temporary restrictions on aircraft landings and takeoffs were imposed at these airports.

Later, some of these restrictions were lifted.

  • On August 11, the Russian army lost 980 troops and dozens of pieces of equipment and weapons in the war against Ukraine.
