Defenders of Paris, London, Berlin: Ukraine celebrates Infantry Day
On May 6, Ukraine celebrates Infantry Day, honoring the brave defenders who stand at the front lines, protecting both Ukrainian and European cities
May 6 marks the Day of Infantry, honoring the oldest and most numerous branch of the military. Despite the advancement of technology and the introduction of long-range weaponry, it is the infantry that remains steadfast at the front lines.
The date, May 6, was chosen for a reason. On this day in 1648, the pivotal Battle of Zhovti Vody took place, where Ukrainian Cossacks achieved a decisive victory. This battle is recognized as the first significant triumph in the National Liberation War under Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. Additionally, according to the church calendar, May 6 is also the day of St. George, the patron saint of the Ukrainian army.
In honor of Infantry Day, the Ukrainian Army released a video urging gratitude toward the infantry. "European capitals and Ukrainian cities. Vast factories and cozy cafes. Thousand-year-old churches and playgrounds. The Ukrainian flag and Ukraine stand because the infantry stand," the video emphasizes.
