Corruption problem in Ukraine is "overemphasized" – Ukraine's PM
Ukraine's new Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko believes the problem of corruption in Ukraine is exaggerated. In her view, citizens rarely encounter bribery in everyday life
She made this statement in an interview with Bloomberg.
During the conversation, Svyrydenko sought to downplay the significance of corruption, citing surveys that show while most Ukrainians believe corruption is widespread, far fewer have experienced it personally.
"To be frank, within Ukrainian society and certain social groups, the issue is being amplified and overemphasized," the prime minister said.
According to her, outside observers evaluate Ukraine by different standards.
She also defended the government's decision to reject a candidate for the head of the Bureau of Economic Security — despite the candidate being approved by a selection committee and supported by the IMF and the European Commission.
The cabinet "acted in line with established procedures: we received the nomination from the selection commission, voted collectively, and sent the decision back to the commission” Svyrydenko said.
