CO2 emissions in Ukraine rise by 180 million tons due to full-scale war
As a result of full-scale Russian aggression, carbon dioxide emissions in Ukraine increased by 180 million tons
Ukraine's Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Svitlana Hrynchuk, shared the information at the conference Climate and Energy Policy of Ukraine in the Context of Accession to the EU, Ukrinform reports.
“We all set a global goal to reduce emissions, fight energy poverty, and achieve decarbonization goals. At the same time, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, our greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 180 million tons of carbon dioxide due to military operations,” Hrynchuk said.
She emphasized that some aggressor countries ignore and destroy all the developments in the climate field. Therefore, according to Hrynchuk, Ukraine should not only work on sustainable transition and recovery, but also document crimes against the environment.
“Our task, and the task of the entire international community, is to prevent a repeat of what is happening now. And we will raise these issues during the COP29 conference,” Hrynchuk added.
- At the International Baku Forum of Ombudspersons on Climate Change and Human Rights, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said that Russia had caused $64 billion worth of damage to Ukraine's environment.
- Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has inflicted environmental damage on Ukraine exceeding €56 billion. Ukraine will demand compensation from the aggressor country.
