China is seeking Ukraine's surrender - diplomat Chaly
The outcome of the Global Peace Summit will determine whether there will be a parallel summit hosted by China in Russia's interests
Former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States Valeriy Chaly expressed this opinion on Espreso.
"The main thing is that the plan should not be vague, that it should be peaceful, basic, and represent Ukraine. Now there are certain risks that there may be a joint document that will blur this position. But there are ways around this situation. I think diplomats are working on this now. But as for China's attempts, it is seeking Ukraine's surrender. Everything is very simple. China understands that Ukraine will not do this. That is why it is satisfied with dragging out the war. On the other hand, it is also not profitable for China to drag it out for a long time. If other countries get involved in this war, then China will lose the situation, as will Putin. So now, at the right time, they want to record Russia's victory," he said.
China is playing against Ukraine. We need to take some measures to at least reduce the threats from it, says Chaly.
"Regarding all the statements about the number of countries, these are still empty statements. This is not a peace plan of China. There are three positions. To stop fighting, that's what Putin wants - to leave what he has captured and stop. We have to realise that China, unfortunately, is not on our side," the diplomat added.
Peace summit in Switzerland
A peace conference on Ukraine is scheduled for June 15-16 in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock. Switzerland has invited more than 160 delegations to the conference, but not Russia. Switzerland explained that they did not invite Russia "at this stage", but consider the peace process as a whole "unthinkable" without Russia's participation.
At the same time, neutral Switzerland strongly condemns Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Switzerland considers the Burgenstock summit to be designed to launch the peace process.
As of May 15, Switzerland reported that more than 50 states had confirmed their participation in the peace summit. Subsequently, Georgia, Malawi, Portugal, Liechtenstein, Croatia, India, Romania, Austria, Albania, Chile, Greece, Norway, North Macedonia, and Côte d'Ivoire also confirmed their participation in the peace conference.
On June 3, it was announced that 107 states and international organisations would participate in the Swiss Peace Summit on Ukraine.
The United States will be represented by Vice President Kamala Harris.
