British Intelligence names Russia's key goals at front, analyzing last week's events
Neither Russian nor Ukrainian troops have made significant progress at the front over the past week, but the main goal of the Russian occupiers remains the encirclement of Avdiivka.
UK Ministry of Defence notes that despite some progress by the Russian troops in capturing Mariinka at the end of December 2023, the invaders were unable to take advantage of this and advance either westward toward Kurakhove or southward toward Novomykhailivka.
At the same time, according to British intelligence, the encirclement of Avdiivka remains a key focus of Russia's efforts. However, Russia has now achieved very limited territorial gains at the cost of significant losses in both equipment and personnel.
"The northern town of Stepove remains under Ukrainian control, which secures access to the Avdiivka supply route. Russia's attempts to isolate the town are unlikely for at least the next week," the British Ministry of Defence wrote.
It also adds that the Ukrainian Marines continue to hold their bridgehead in Krynky on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, despite Russian attempts to dislodge them. British intelligence suggests that they will continue to fight for this territory next week.
