Australia sanctions 60 Russian shadow fleet vessels
Australia imposes sanctions on shadow fleet ships used by Russia to evade global restrictions and fund its war against Ukraine
The Australian government has introduced targeted sanctions on 60 vessels that are part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet.
This marks the first occasion that Australia has specifically sanctioned ships used in this covert network.
These vessels are employed by Russia to evade global sanctions and continue funding its unlawful and unethical war against Ukraine.
The shadow fleet operates through deceptive tactics, such as frequently changing national flags, disabling tracking systems, and sailing without proper insurance, enabling the illegal transport of Russian oil and other restricted goods.
With these sanctions, Australia reaffirms its longstanding stance: those responsible for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — and those who support it — must be held accountable.
Together with similar measures taken by allies including Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, these sanctions aim to cut off key sources of revenue for Russia’s war effort.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Australia has imposed over 1,400 individual sanctions. The government pledges to maintain coordinated and decisive actions that defend Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while disrupting Russia’s war financing.
Australia once again urges Russia to immediately end its invasion and withdraw from Ukrainian territory. The country remains firmly committed to supporting a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine.
