40% of Ukrainian refugees consider returning home after war ends
Minister of National Unity Oleksii Chernyshov stated that 40% of Ukrainians who fled abroad due to Russia’s full-scale invasion are considering returning to Ukraine after the war ends
He made this statement during a meeting with journalists, Suspilne reports.
According to Chernyshov, forecasts suggest that 30% of Ukrainians who left during the full-scale invasion will remain in Europe, while 40% are still undecided about their future plans.
"These 40% (of Ukrainians who left – ed.) represent a field of engagement where Ukraine’s and Europe’s labor markets can compete for these people. If we create conditions for economic development, reforms, and progress in Ukraine, people will start returning. But if we remain the same as we were before the full-scale invasion, people will not return in significant numbers," he said.
The Minister of National Unity added that 4.9 million Ukrainian citizens are currently under temporary protection in Europe. However, he noted that the actual number might be higher, as it also includes those who left before Russia’s full-scale invasion.
- As of the end of January 2025, nearly 4.3 million Ukrainians had received temporary protection in EU countries. Compared to December 2024, their number increased by more than 25,000.
