Russia puts Meta's press secretary on wanted list
The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has put Andy Stone, a spokesman for Meta, which includes Facebook and Instagram, on the Russian federal wanted list
This is reported by the Russian outlet Mediazona.
Mediazona found Andy Stone's card in the database of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, which appeared there in February 2023.
According to the outlet, in mid-November 2023, a Russian court also ordered Stone's arrest in absentia under the article on promoting terrorism.
On March 11, 2022, the Russian Investigative Committee opened a case under this article because of Meta's decision not to block Facebook and Instagram users who allegedly called for the "death of Russian invaders." On the same day, the new rules were limited to the territory of Ukraine.
The Russian agency also mentioned the name of Stone in a press release about the criminal case, who announced the Meta innovation on his Twitter page.
- Roskomnadzor, Russia's Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Communications, Information Technologies and Mass Communications, blocked Facebook in Russia on March 4, 2022, even before the user rules were changed, and access to Instagram was restricted on March 14.
- At the same time, the Tver District Court of Moscow recognized Meta as an "extremist organization"; however, their WhatsApp messenger was not affected.
