Russia loses elections to 3 UN bodies

This week, Russia has lost elections to 3 UN bodies at once. Russia has been defeated by Romania, Estonia, Armenia and the Czech Republic

The Associated Press reported the information.

During the vote in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Russia lost to Romania for a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women.

Russia was also defeated by Estonia during the vote for a seat on the Executive Board of the UN Children's Agency UNICEF. Moscow also failed to promote its representatives to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, as Armenia and the Czech Republic were elected.

According to Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the American ambassador to the UN, the 3 defeats at once demonstrate the attitude toward Russia.

"This is a clear signal from ECOSOC members that no country should hold positions on critical UN bodies when they are in flagrant violation of the UN Charter," the official said.

Despite this, Russia was still elected to some of the Organization's bodies, namely the Commission for Social Development and the Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Standards of Accounting and Reporting.
