Russia inflicts USD 4.3 bln losses on Ukrainian agro-industrial sector - research
The total losses suffered by Ukraine’s agro-industrial sector as a result of Russia's full-scale war on Ukraine is USD 4.3 billion
This was what a recent study by Kyiv School of Economics' (KSE) Institute for Food Research and Land Use Centre has found. Their research paper "A review of war losses in Ukraine's agriculture", was prepared in conjunction with Ukraine's Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.
They found that the total losses the war has inflicted on Ukraine's agriculture sector amount to USD 4.3 billion.
The biggest losses, USD 2.135 bln, were found to be due to the destruction or partial damage of agricultural land and non-harvesting season.
The report highlights the extent to which the agro-industrial sector suffers from mines in fields and direct physical damage.
It is estimated that 2.4 million hectares with USD 1.435 bln worth of winter crops will remain unharvested due to Russia's war, the research paper found.
Agricultural machinery is also damaged by shelling and air strikes.
Meanwhile, Russia is deliberately destroying elevator capacity to weaken Ukraine's agricultural sector, the study says.
"The total amount of agricultural losses due to damage or destruction of granaries is estimated at USD 272 million," the paper finds.
