Russian propagandists launch new fake claim about student mobilization in Ukraine
A few days ago, several Russian websites simultaneously reported that "Ukrainian parents are withdrawing their children from universities en masse to save them from mobilization"
Espreso explains why this claim is false.
The report, originally published by RIA Novosti, claims that Ukraine has started mobilizing young people from the age of 18, which is why Ukrainian parents are withdrawing their children from the universities.
The screenshot displays headlines from Russian media saying that "Ukrainians are withdrawing their children from schools and universities."
In reality, Ukrainian law states that only individuals aged 25 and older can be mobilized.
The new Russian made-up story stems from a recent announcement by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. On February 11, the ministry introduced a one-year contract for volunteers aged 18-24 who have not previously received military training or served in the army.
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov made it clear: this contract is not mobilization. After a year of service, volunteers can choose to stay in the Armed Forces or return to civilian life.
Contrary to this Russian claim, starting September 1, 2025, Ukraine will introduce a system where students can receive basic military training as part of their university studies. This will be a separate academic discipline. Those who complete this training will be exempt from mandatory basic military training, which will replace the canceled conscription. Beginning in 2025, men aged 18 to 25 in Ukraine will be required to undergo basic military training, unless they complete it through their university studies.
Russian propagandists confidently shared another fake story, knowing that many of their audience (the Russian) are unlikely to have the resources or inclination to look into the true situation.
