Russia expands Orthodox Church presence in Africa, opening parishes across 30 countries
Over the past three years, parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church have been opened in 30 African countries, with half of them established in 2022
The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) reported the information.
According to their data, this indicates that the Russian Orthodox Church's increased activity in Africa is linked to the need to strengthen Russia's alliances after the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine.
Disguised as protecting African Orthodox Christians, Russia is spreading its influence and propaganda across the continent. The Russian Orthodox Church claims to African populations that Russia is not connected to colonialism, racism, and slavery – sensitive topics for Africa.
“However, this is a lie, as the use of serfs and colonial wars in the Caucasus, Asia, and Europe contradicts this claim,” the Center for Countering Disinformation emphasized.
They added that, as a powerful tool for spreading the "Russian World" ideology, the Russian Orthodox Church complements Russia's military presence on the continent and aims to increase support for Russia's actions in the international political arena.
- As previously reported, Russia plans to establish cooperation centers with African bloggers and expand its Russian television network.
