Officials debunk Russian fake about breakthrough into Dnipropetrovsk region
A photo is circulating online allegedly showing Russian troops reaching the administrative border of Dnipropetrovsk region. The Regional Military Administration refuted this fake on May 21
This was reported by the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Serhiy Lysak.
Russian media claimed there had been a supposed “breakthrough” into Dnipropetrovsk region from the Donetsk region. As “evidence,” they published a photo showing soldiers with a Russian flag sitting on a pickup truck entangled in barbed wire. They claim the photo was taken near the village of Novomykolaivka.
“This is fake! Both the ‘news’ and the photo allegedly illustrating it. They are not true. The enemy deliberately published them to frighten residents of our region, spread panic, and destabilize the situation,” Lysak wrote.
The OSINT project DeepState explained that the pickup truck actually belonged to Ukrainian soldiers who got entangled in barbed wire at night. By morning, Russian troops had reached the spot and began taking pictures. According to Ukrainian soldiers, the photo was taken near the village of Troitske in Luhansk Oblast.
- On May 21, the Center for Countering Disinformation also refuted another fake being spread by pro-Russian Telegram channels, which claimed that Ukrainian soldiers had allegedly killed a civilian in Kharkiv.
