Moldova says Russia behind cyberattack on electoral commission ahead of vote

Moldova’s deputy prime minister accused Russia of launching a cyberattack against the country’s electoral commission this week, days before a parliamentary election

Doina Nistor, who also serves as digital minister, said the incident was part of a wider hybrid campaign designed to destabilize the country’s democracy. Authorities said hackers hijacked Wi-Fi routers in a distributed denial-of-service attack that attempted to overload commission servers.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu told the European Parliament earlier this week that Moscow was spending “hundreds of millions of euros” to subvert the election. Security officials and cyber intelligence firms in the West have also linked recent meddling attempts to Russia.

The European Union said it had deployed its newly created cyber reserve to Moldova to help strengthen defenses, the first such deployment under the bloc’s Cyber Solidarity Act.
