Rosatom plans to build experimental nuclear reactor in Belarus
Rosatom is discussing with the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences the construction of a research nuclear reactor at the Sosny Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research
Stanislav Levitsky, director of Rosatom's office in Belarus said this, BelTA reports.
“We are at the stage of approving an intergovernmental agreement. When it is finalized, we will start construction. We are ready... I hope that by the end of this year we will come to a common denominator and be able to start construction,” he said.
“I think it is quite possible to build it within two or three years from the moment the documents are signed,” Levitsky added.
He explained that one of the goals of creating a research reactor in Belarus is to test new nuclear fuel assemblies for the Belarusian (Ostrovets) NPP, which was opened on October 7, 2020.

In November 2020, Belarusian oppositionist Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya stated that the construction of the Ostrovets NPP was not discussed with the public or with neighboring partner states, and the launch was carried out without independent control and necessary tests.
