Right-wing rise in Poland’s election is concerning, says Ukrainian MP
Ukrainian MP Mykola Kniazhytskyi noted that, based on the results of the first round of the presidential election in Poland, candidates Grzegorz Braun and Sławomir Mentzen, known for their anti-Ukrainian and antisemitic views, together received over 20% of the vote
He shared the information on Espreso TV.
“Our readers should understand that Trzaskowski is a representative of the ruling coalition, the mayor of Warsaw, a pro-European and democratic candidate. Nawrocki represents the Law and Justice party (PiS), which is also represented by Andrzej Duda. Clearly, PiS members are right-wing and, on one hand, support Ukraine because they are anti-Russian, but at the same time, in many areas, such as the economy and historical policy, we are opponents. If they were in power, the support would be different from what we have now,” the MP noted.
According to him, in Poland, the president can completely block the government's work, for example, by refusing to sign laws.
“What frightened me most was Braun’s 6% — he is anti-Ukrainian and antisemitic. He trampled the Ukrainian flag. Braun, together with Mentzen, who also did disgraceful things in Ukraine on the streets of our cities, together have over 20%. Overall, the number of right-wing supporters is growing, clearly due to Russian support. That is what’s concerning. Polish society is divided — roughly speaking, one half are democrats and liberals, the other half are conservative nationalists. Accordingly, no one can fully predict the outcome of the presidential election in Poland. I hope the results of the elections in Romania will influence Poland and inspire democratic Poland to fight for victory,” concluded Mykola Kniazhytskyi.
- On Sunday, May 18, 2025, Poland held the first round of its presidential election. According to data from most polling stations, the two leading candidates heading to the runoff are separated by less than 2%.
